Short for original equipment manufacturer, which is a misleading term for a company that has a special relationship with computer producers. OEMs are manufacturers who resell another company's product under their own name and branding. While an OEM is similar to a VAR (value-added reseller), it refers specifically to the act of a company re-branding a product to its own name and offering its own warranty, support and licensing of the product. The term is really a misnomer because OEMs are not the original manufacturers; they are the customizers.
Non-Branded refers to cell phones that are obtained directly from their respectful manufacturer i.e. Nokia. Non-Branded cell phones come in packaging that only has manufacturer emblems, logos or symbols. The cell phone itself would also only show manufacturer logos.
Unlocked means that the phone is not locked to any particular service provider. Therefore you can buy a handset and use it with any service provider that is supported by the handset. Before you purchase the phone of your choice, please ensure that the frequency of your cell phone service provider is supported by the phone you wish to purchase.
A travel charger is a charger that is compatible with all countries. This means that you may use a travel charger anywhere in the world (110V-220V). However, for some travel chargers, you will need to set the voltage settings of the charger to your country's voltage settings first for it to be compatible. Please note that even though the voltage of the charger is universal the plugs may not be suited for use in your country. None the less, the adapter plugs may be obtained at any local electronics store at a very minimal cost.
SIM free means you purchase the phone without an actual line. The cell phone is not locked to any particular service provider. Therefore, you can buy a new handset without having to commit to a minimum term contract with a service provider.
The majority of our products come with travel chargers (100-240V) and no transformer is needed. However, some products may come with 110 Volt only chargers and a transformer is needed. If you are insisting to use it in a country with different voltage settings, you will need to obtain the necessary transformer and/or adapter.
The acronym GSM stands for Global System for Mobile communications. Originally developed for use in Europe, GSM now controls over 70% of the global cellular market.
Bluetooth Wireless Technology proves a link between mobile phones, mobile computers (laptops), and other assorted technologies. Bluetooth Wireless Technology can also be used to connect to the Internet.
A cellular phone band is the frequency in megahertz on witch it operates. Band options are as follows:
- 850MHz (USA)
- 900 MHz (Europe and Asia)
- 1800MHz (Europe and Asia)
- 1900MHx (USA)
Unlike competing systems, such as GSM, that use TDMA, CDMA does not assign a specific frequency to each user. Instead, every channel uses the full available spectrum. Individual conversations are encoded with a pseudo-random digital sequence. CDMA consistently provides better capacity for voice and data communications than other commercial mobile technologies, allowing more subscribers to connect at any given time, and it is the common platform on which 3G technologies are built.
Short for Infrared Data Association, a group of device manufacturers that developed a standard for transmitting data via infrared light waves. Increasingly, computers and other devices (such as printers) come with IrDA ports. This enables you to transfer data from one device to another without any cables. For example, if both your laptop computer and printer have IrDA ports, you can simply put your computer in front of the printer and output a document, without needing to connect the two with a cable. IrDA ports support roughly the same transmission rates as traditional parallel ports. The only restrictions on their use is that the two devices must be within a few feet of each other and there must be a clear line of sight between them.
Triband phones (also known as tri-band or tri-mode) are mobile phones that support the GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz bands (commonly sold in Europe, Asia, and Africa), or alternatively the 850/1800/1900 bands (commonly sold in the Americas). Various countries use different frequency bands for their mobile networks, and a tri-band phone can be used on three of these bands, generally speaking, chosen to favor two of the home country's bands, and one for roaming in other countries. A quad band phone will offer more coverage.
Quad band literally means four (4) bands. Most people come across the term when it is used to describe a GSM mobile phone. The GSM standard originated in Europe, where mobile phones occupy two frequency bands: one in the 900-MHz range and one in the 1800-MHz range. When GSM technology crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, it was impossible to reuse the same European frequency bands since those had already been allocated to other devices by the FCC. Hence, a different pair of frequency bands were made available for GSM use: the 850 and 1900-MHz bands.
